Referee Pay Schedule

DPRYS Referees

In 2007, significant changes were made to the DPRYS referee program. These changes are designed to improve the skills of the referee squad while giving referees the opportunity to earn more than the normal base pay per game. Also, each year, we receive more applications for referees than there are spots available on the referee squad. The factors for determining pay will also be used to determine who is selected for the available referee slots.

Referee Age

You must be 13 years old as of May 31st of the current season to referee for DPRYS. Candidate referees should have played at least 3 out of the last 5 years.

Referee Uniform

Beginning this season, DPRYS will provide a full uniform for referees including:

  • Shirt
  • Shorts
  • Socks
  • Whistle with a lanyard
  • Red / Yellow cards
Referees will need to provide their own stopwatch and appropriate shoes (soccer shoes, turf shoes or tennis shoes MUST be worn). Referees will be required to wear their full uniform at all games (with their shirt tucked in!).

Referee Pay

Base pay for DPRYS referees is $8 per game for small field games (ages 5 - 7) and $12 per game for medium field games (ages 8-11).  If only one referee is able to attend a game for 8-11 year olds, that referee is paid an extra $6 for a total of $18.

This is the pay that all DPRYS referees will receive at game time during the season. DPRYS referees may now earn additional bonus pay that they will receive at the end of the season. The bonus will be based on:

  1. Level of training: Training is required for all referees with less than 4 years of experience. There are two options for training:
    • SAY county level training. This training is held over 2 days, normally a Thursday evening and a Saturday. Referees that attend SAY county level training will be eligible for additional bonus pay for each game that they referee. Rookie and 2nd year referees MUST attend county level training in order to be eligible for bonus pay. The cost for this training is $6 --- DPRYS referees that attend this training class will be reimbursed for this cost.
    • DPRYS basic training. This is a short, 3 hour training class - a "race through the rules" with less time for interaction and discussion of application and technique. Referees that attend the DPRYS basic training are not eligible for a bonus based on level of training.
  2. Score on the referee test: Referees that achieve a test score of 91 or higher on the first scoring of their referee test are eligible for additional bonus pay for each game that they referee.
  3. Years of experience: Referees with 2 or more years of experience may be eligible for bonus pay depending on what training class they attend and the score that they achieve on the first scoring of their referee test.
Again, the bonus pay check will be sent out shortly after the end of the season. It will be based on the game score cards, which show the referee(s) that worked the game.

Bonus Pay Example

A typical DPRYS referee last year earned $136 over the course of the season working 8 small field games and 6 large field games. This year, if that same referee:
  • has two years of experience
  • attends county training
  • achieves a test score of 95 on the first scoring of their referee test
  • works a similar schedule of 8 small field games and 6 large field games
... they would receive a bonus check for $44 at the end of the season (8 times $2.50 plus 6 times $4). If that same referee achieves a score of 98 or higher on the first scoring of their referee test, they would receive a bonus of $68 at the end of the season (8 times $4 plus 6 times $6).
