Coaches: Training Sessions
|
| |
Each coach in the De Pere Rapides Youth Soccer
Club...
is required to attend at least two
(2) training sessions, plus the new coaches orientation
if you are a first-time coach in our club. Most sessions are only one (1)
hour long. Participants are reminded that many of the sessions involve game-like
situations and will be very interactive. Therefore, participants should dress accordingly
(athletic gear and tennis shoes or cleats).

Session Descriptions
New Coaches Orientation (100)
Covers league administration and basic team leader responsibilities. This will include
how to host a practice, how to keep in touch with your players and what the league
requirements are for maintaining a “recreational” perspective for the league.
Basic Skills 1 and 2 (100)
The “Basic Skills” sessions are targeted at new coaches in the U6 and U8 divisions.
In addition to learning how to coach the basic skills required for trapping, dribbling,
passing and shooting, you will have the opportunity to ask any questions with being
a first time coach, or coaching young players.
Laws of the Game (200)
This session will be an interactive guide to the laws of soccer. In addition to
reviewing the actual rule book, there will be an opportunity to “see” each violation
played out through role playing exercises.
Dribbling to Beat an Opponent (200)
Dribbling can be done with the inside, outside, instep or sole of the foot. This
session will focus on learning the right technique to use at the right time, in
addition to learning several “moves” to get past opponents.
Receiving the Ball – AKA Trapping (200)
This session will cover several techniques for using the head, chest, thighs and
feet for quickly getting control of the ball, as well as teaching one-touch techniques
for redirecting the ball to a teammate.
Passing: Making Positive and Supportive Runs (200)
Making a run at the goal is rarely a one-on-one scenario. This session will teach
how to move the ball down field in a coordinated effort; one that includes supporting
help from all positions on your team.
Goalkeeping (200)
This session will cover the basic goalie positioning and blocking techniques while
defending the goal, as well as how to set the goalie up as a defensive lead.
Defending Techniques and Tactics (300)
There are several different defensive structures in soccer. Which one you should
use and when is a function of your team’s abilities and opponent’s strengths. Learn
what the different defensive strategies are and how they can be used effectively.
Playing Out of the Back (300)
Once your defense has taken control, the next step is to have a strategy for moving
the ball out of the back and into the middle. This session will focus on transitioning
from defensive positions to offensive runs, starting with the ball deep on your
half.
Playing Through the Middle Third of the Field (300)
This session focuses on using the half-back positions to navigate the ball through
the middle of the field. The middle of the field is generally open and unstructured,
so learning to play through the middle can create scoring opportunities.
Finishing at the Net (300)
Getting in position to score is one thing; actually scoring is another. This session
will cover where and how to correctly shoot on goal.
